What Is Strands?

Strands is a daily word search puzzle game published by The New York Times that challenges players to find hidden words on a 6x8 grid filled with 48 letters. Words can bend in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) without overlapping or reusing letters. They have to share a connection with the daily theme. 

Types of Words to Find

• Theme Words: Words that directly relate to the day’s theme. When correctly identified, the letter tiles highlight in blue.
• Spangram (Main Keyword): The core word or phrase that fully describes the overarching theme. It always stretches across the board (either left-to-right or top-to-bottom). When correctly identified, the letter tiles turn yellow.
• Hint Words: Uncovering valid English words of 4+ letters that aren’t in the main solution fills a hint meter. Every three non-theme words unlock a hint that highlights the letter group for one hidden theme word.

E.g.: Read the clue loosely. The 5 answers sit inside that idea; none of them is a definition of it. The spangram runs across the grid, left edge to right, so look for a long sideways path first.

• Hint 2 (First letters): Uncovers the starting letter for each theme word hidden on the board.

E.g.: Sorted alphabetically, the first letters are D, D, O, P, R. Two of them start with the same letter (D).

• Hint 3 (Word lengths): Shows the exact character count for every theme word to narrow down letter paths.

E.g.: The theme words are 5, 6, 7, 9 and 9 letters long. The shortest is 5 letters, the longest 9.

• The Spangram: Reveals the primary theme-spanning word and its orientation across the grid.

E.g.: WORKINGTITLE → It is a single word of 12 letters and it touches two opposite sides of the board. Starts with W, ends with E.

• Answers (All theme words): Unlocks the full list of theme words when stuck on the final remaining choices.

E.g.: RABBI (5 letters), DOCTOR (6 letters), OFFICER (7 letters), DETECTIVE (9 letters), PROFESSOR (9 letters).

• Board (The completed grid): Displays the final completed letter grid showing all connected paths.

Check Out Yesterday’s Strands

Yesterday’s Strands allows solvers to review past themes, check Spangram answers, and read through past clues without affecting the active board. On Strands Hint Today, players can check:

• Puzzle Reference: Shows the previous puzzle number and theme phrase (e.g.: #911 · “Mark my words”).

How to Reveal Strands Words Without Spoilers

• Read the Theme First: The daily theme prompt is not a spoiler since the game displays it immediately. However, the game does not explain how broadly or literally to interpret the phrase. Checking the first theme explanation clarifies the intended scope before searching for specific letter paths.
• Take One Rung, Then Return to the Board: Reveal a single hint level at a time and test it on the letter grid before looking further. Each step on the hint ladder is designed to give just enough information for solvers to make progress independently.
• Save the Full Grid for Last: The completed letter grid serves as the final option for a reason. Revealing the entire board removes all remaining hidden words at once, so it should only be opened when completely stuck on the last few letters.
